They also come in a consistent color, so there's no need to guess how your final quilted or embroidery design will turn out.

There are two main types of variegated mixes, tonal and contrasting. Tonal colors consist of multiple shades of a single color, such as dark blue and mid-blue, that provide a gradient effect when pieced together. Contrasting colors consist of multiple colors that are dyed in a repeating pattern and stand out on the fabric. When the thread is to blend into the fabric, tone-on-tone colors are preferred, while contrasting colors are often used when the stitching is to be visible.
